Today is the second-annual #GivingTuesday, a campaign that designates the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as a national day of giving and kicks off the holiday giving season. Started last year by New York’s 92nd Street Y and other partners, the movement is really gaining momentum in the nonprofit community.
We love the idea—it’s a great reminder to consider the causes whose work you want to support. Sustainable America, hopefully, is one of them. We have come up with a list of ways you can help support our mission to reduce U.S. oil consumption while increasing U.S. food production on #GivingTuesday.
1. Donate to Sustainable America: Making a charitable donation to Sustainable America will help fund efforts that support our mission, like expanding our idling campaign, helping more events compost their food waste, and funding fellowships for startups working to solve food and fuel issues. 2. Pledge to stop idling: If you can’t give money, we’ve got another way you can give back that pays you and the planet back: Join our campaign to end unnecessary vehicle idling by pledging to stop idling at iturnitoff.com. We’ll send you a free bumper sticker so you can spread the word, help clean the air in your community, and help reduce our dependence on foreign oil—all at the same time.
3. Support sustainable food in your area: Put your money where you mouth is, literally, by choosing to buy food from local farms, CSAs, or stores who offer local, sustainably produced products. Or, try growing some yourself.
4. Commit to reducing food waste: Whether you shop smarter, eat that last bit of leftover turkey in your fridge, or start composting, there are many ways to make an impact on our nation’s food waste problem that will also leave more money in your pocket.
