On Sunday, Sept. 14, Sustainable America and our partner Grind2Energy, will hit the road once again for the fifth-annual Boston Local Food Festival taking place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in downtown Boston.
Themed “Healthy Local Food for All,” the Boston Local Food Festival is a free outdoor festival that showcases local farmers, restaurants, food trucks, specialty food producers, fisher folks and organizations focusing on healthy food and fitness from across New England. There will be cooking demos from local chefs, live music and kids activities — and all the food is priced at $6 or less!
This year, Sustainable America and Grind2Energy will be on hand teaching festivalgoers about food waste issues and solutions, including home composting and the Grind2Energy Technology, a new food waste tool for commercial operations. This technology can help turn one ton of food waste into 140 pounds of nutrient-dense fertilizer and create enough biogas to heat a home for two weeks! With over 26 million tons of food waste generated in the U.S each year (roughly 40% of all food produced), there is significant potential for sustainable change in capturing and processing this waste responsibly. (The picture below of the Grind2Energy trailer is from our visit to the Kentucky Derby Festival this spring.)
From 2-3 p.m. Sustainable America and Grind2Energy will host a discussion and demo titled “From Trash to Treasure: Transforming Food Waste.” We’d love to see you there, or stop by anytime during the day to learn about food waste and check out the Grind2Energy system. We’ll be giving away a free guide to home composting and information about Boston-area composting options. Look for us by the Boston Harbor Hotel at Rowes Wharf.
We’re excited to be involved with the Boston Local Food Festival. It’s a zero-waste event, meaning the event diverts over 90% of its waste from landfill and incineration each year. And all the food waste we process through the Grind2Energy system during our demonstrations will be transported to the AGreen Anaerobic Digester at Jordan Farm in Rutland, Mass., where it will be turned into fertilizer and energy! Our diversion numbers will be reported back to the festival’s organizers to add to the events totals.
Join us at the Boston Local Food Festival on Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to learn more, including what you can do to be a part of the solution!
